Durante un discurso histórico en la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York hoy, Francisco dijo a los líderes mundiales que la búsqueda de ganancias materiales y de energía ha llevado a la destrucción de los recursos naturales de la Tierra, a expensas de los que viven en la extrema pobreza.
"Una sed egoísta y sin límites por el poder y la prosperidad material conduce tanto a la mala utilización de los recursos naturales disponibles y la exclusión de los más débiles y desfavorecidos", dijo. El líder espiritual de los 1.2 mil millones de católicos del mundo condenó el grave delito de la exclusión económica y social.
"La dramática realidad de toda esta situación de la exclusión y la desigualdad, con sus efectos evidentes, me ha llevado, en unión con todo el pueblo cristiano y muchos otros, a hacer un balance de mi grave responsabilidad en este sentido y a hablar de ella", agregó.
